No. 2 Gamecocks Second, Rydqvist Tied for Lead at Auburn Regional

South Carolina Athletics

Carolina three shots back of host, No. 7 Auburn, after 18 holes ; Rydqvist fires 3-under 69 and is one of just four players to break par opening round

AUBURN, Ala. – No. 2 South Carolina got off to a solid start at the NCAA Auburn Regional on Monday with an opening round 293 (+5) that has the team in second place three shots behind the host No. 7 Auburn. Junior All-American Louise Rydqvist played lights out as she’s tied for the lead at 3-under after the opening 18 holes.

Rydqvist made just one bogey and was bogey free on the back nine with a trio of birdies. She’s tied for the lead with Auburn All-American Megan Schofill. Just four players in the 60-women field broke par the opening 18 holes at Auburn University Club.

The course is playing challenging for the field to no surprise with long holes, tough pins and firm greens.

The Gamecocks were 5-over at the turn and the team’s four counters on the back nine were 2-under. Junior All-American Hannah Darling and talented freshman Vairana Heck each 74 (+2) which has them just outside the top-10. They each had a pair of birdies on the day.

Sophomore Mia Sandtorv Lussand was the final counting score with a 76 (+4). She made the turn at 4-over but was even on the back nine with a pair of birdies. Freshman Maylis Lamoure shot 77 (+5).

There’s a three-way tie for third at 10-over between No. 14 Oregon, Tulsa and Houston. Fifth-seeded North Carolina sits just outside the top-five at 12-over.

The Gamecocks will be paired with the Tigers and No. 14 Oregon again for the second round on Tuesday. Senior Sophia Burnett has been subbed in for Lamoure and will be the first Carolina player off on hole one at 8 a.m. ET. Golfstat will have live scoring again.
