SOUTH CAROLINA HEAD COACH LOU HOLTZ

It was a hard-fought game. It was a game of field position, and we never had much. We nwere never successful on third and short, but I give Georgia credit for that. Three fumbles.

This was really hard. I am very proud of our football players. They never gave up. They fought their heart out.

It was a great football game, a game of field position.

The defense played absolutely outstanding. They gave up a big play on first play. Corey Jenkins and Dondrial Pinkins competed like heck.

I am proud of this football team. And disappointed.

Two critical penalties. So many little things. Twelve guys on the field because a freshman ran in. We dropped some passes that were critical. The crowd was tremendous

On the goal line play: I should have listed to Skip. He wanted to run it to the tight end. Corey would have ended up with ball. I knew if we could get the quick pitch, and get Pinnock in the open field running north-south. … It looked like a good pitch. Skip wanted to run the same play but to the tight end.

You use your timeouts to your advantage. Turned out he fumbled it.

I feel sorry for Andrew. He was involved with all three turnovers.

Where do we go from here? This was a heart breaker. This was hard.

On defense: We played more nickel. Four deep secondary, so we could drop down. We just turned the players loose and let them go play.POSTGAME QUOTES – Sept. 14, 2002 (USC vs. Georgia)

SOUTH CAROLINA PLAYER QUOTES

DE George Gause
“This week we added a few calls. We also made a few adjustments and worked hard in practice. It’s hard, but it’s a team effort, everyone has to do their job. There were a few turnovers, but that’s not why we didn’t win.”

S Rashad Faison
“We knew we had a big challenge. Georgia is a great offensive team, but we can’t be scared. We have something to prove. After the game I simply told the defense that we’re back and the team’s effort each and every week is important.”

WR Ryan Brewer
“We didn’t play the game we’re capable of. We now realize the potential in this team. Corey threw the ball great and the offensive line did a great job. (On TD reception) Corey threw me a good ball. I went up and got it. It was in my reach, I am a receiver.”

DB Dunta Robinson
“It was a frustrating loss. (Are you disappointed in the offense?) No, all we can do is have positive feelings for the offense. We are a family. We win together and we lose together.”

QB Corey Jenkins
“The way we played tremendous. We can’t get it to go our way, but tonight we showed a lot of guts. We have to take the good with the bad and hopefully soon it’ll go our way.”

RB Andrew Pinnock
“We were running the option and the guy came off the edge quickly. I should have been expecting the pitch to come when it did. I dropped the pitch and we lost the game.”

GEORGIA HEAD COACH MARK RICHT

“Our defense played well. They scored more points that the offense. They are all warriors and they all played tough. Pollock (on his interception for TD) beat a lineman and a back; he blocked the pass and brought it down for a touchdown. You can’t ask for a better play from a player. I’ve never seen a play like that. He works hard like that everyday.”

“We had many opportunities that we had that we didn’t make. We’re missing by inches on some plays and we better be making by inches soon or we’re going to be in trouble later in the season.”

“Our players would not fold under pressure. We made some mistakes and we need some more production on offense. We can’t just leave the burden on our kicking game and defense.”

“I didn’t anticipate the number of turnovers South Carolina made and I certainly didn’t anticipate them turning it over on that last play. I don’t know what would have happened had they not fumbled on their last play. I was just hoping we’d get it.”

GEORGIA PLAYER QUOTES

ST Jon Stinchcomb
“The bottom line is you have to go when things don’t go right and you have to work hard to be prepared for things like this. These kind of things happen every Saturday, and today isn’t any different then the rest. South Carolina comes to play every year that we meet. They got the better of us the last two years; we were just able to edge them out this year.”

QB David Greene
“Our defense was unbelievable this game. We have been playing games as a team and have been getting it done. We have seen the defense that Carolina plays before, but they played it so well that we struggled with it today. We were in some tough situations today; we had some missed assignments but we somehow were able to make it through. It feels really good to win here.”

PK Billy Bennett
“I think that Coach made a good call today. We have a lot of work to do as a unit, but I think overall we are doing pretty well. I had no idea that the kick [in the first quarter] would be so important. I am glad I was able to contribute so well tonight.”
