COLUMBIA, S.C. – Renovations at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium have begun to completely overhaul the playing surface with a state-of-the-art drainage system and turf in time for the 2009 men’s and women’s soccer seasons. GamecocksOnline.com will provide updates and photo galleries of the renovations as they continue throughout the summer.

Originally built in the 1970’s, “The Graveyard” will undergo a nine-part renovation plan to give the soccer programs an advanced field that in past seasons would not drain properly due to its slope.

Part One of the renovations is complete with the removal and disposal of the former turf. As renovations move forward, a sub-grade will be established to level the playing surface in addition to updated drainage systems to prevent field saturation due to heavy rain. A modern automated irrigation system will then be added before the renovations are completed with the installation of Tifway 419 Bermudagrass sod.

The South Carolina men’s soccer team will debut the new field Tuesday, Aug. 25 in an exhibition against High Point University. The women’s season opener will be held at Stone Stadium Fri., Aug. 28 against College of Charleston.
