University of South Carolina Athletics finished 39th in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for 2008-09, it was announced today. The Gamecocks improved nine spots from their 48th-place finish during the 2007-08 campaign.
The Directors’ Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Learfield Sports and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. The Cardinal of Stanford took home its 15th-straight title, scoring 1455 points.
South Carolina tallied a total of 560.75 points over the course of the year. The Gamecocks received 73.5 points from men’s outdoor track & field, 73 points from women’s tennis, 60.75 points from women’s indoor track & field, 58.5 points from men’s golf, 53.5 points from men’s indoor track & field, 50 points from baseball, 44.5 points from men’s swimming & diving, 39 points from women’s golf, 33 points from women’s outdoor track & field, and 25 points each from football, women’s soccer and men’s tennis.
The Gamecocks have finished in the top-40 in the country in the final standings 11 times in the past 13 years.
Schools are able to count points from 20 intercollegiate sports, 10 on the men’s side and 10 on the women’s side. Compete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA’s website at www.directorscup.org.
