Burgess Named to Buster Posey Award Watch List
The junior from Lexington, Ky., is up for the award, handed out to the top catcher in Division I baseball.
WICHITA, Kan. – University of South Carolina junior catcher Colin Burgess has been named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced this afternoon (Thursday, March 10). The 2022 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award is given annually to the top Division I catcher in the country.
Burgess is on the list for the second straight season. He threw out 16 runners trying to steal in 2021, hitting .241 with 21 runs scored, three doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI. He also had a 20-game reached base streak from March 21-April 23, 2021. This season, Burgess has a pair of doubles and three RBI in 12 games.
Seventy-six catchers were nominated for the award by their schools. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 19, 2022. Ballots will be sent to the national voting committee at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 7, 2022. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced on June 29, 2022.
Carolina will host No. 1 Texas for a three-game series starting Friday afternoon (March 11) at 1 p.m. The game will be on SEC Network Plus.
