Gamecocks Take Down Wake Forest In Exhibition Match
Result and stats will not count toward regular season
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —- No. 17 South Carolina women’s soccer dominated the first 12 minutes of play in a 2-0 exhibition victory over Wake Forest on Thursday night at Spry Stadium. As is the case with all exhibitions, the result and stats will not count toward the regular season.
Catherine Barry started the match in style, finishing in the bottom left corner of the net off the left foot thanks to a Ryan Gareis assist to put the Gamecocks on top 1-0 at the 8-minute mark. Just four minutes later, the pair flipped results as Gareis’ goal at the 12-minute mark off the Barry assist gave Carolina the 2-0 lead it wouldn’t surrender.
“I thought it was a great opportunity for us to play another opponent, a strong opponent,” head coach Shelley Smith said. “Tonight gave us a chance to put lineups out there that we wanted to see. We had players returning from injury that needed a chance to get back out there and freshmen that hadn’t played at the college level and it was good to see them out there competing. Everyone played and learned something tonight.”
More than the final score, the night was a success as 20 different Gamecocks recorded minutes, including five freshmen in their first unofficial appearance in the garnet and black. The two teams squared off for roughly 78 minutes of action.
Carolina now turns its attention to the regular-season opener as it plays host to The Citadel on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. ET on SECN+. Live stats will be provided through gamecocksonline.com.
