Boesel and Maguire Named Academic All-Americans

First time Carolina has had multiple selections since 1989

AUSTIN, TEXAS —- South Carolina softball’s Mackenzie Boesel and Kenzi Maguire were named 2020 Academic All-Americans, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the national organization announced Thursday. Boesel was named to the first team while Maguire was selected to the second team.

This marks the first time since 1989 Carolina has had multiple Academic All-America honors in the same year and just the second time ever. It’s the fourth-straight year the Gamecocks have had at least one selection, the longest streak in program history.

In 2019, Boesel became the third player in program history earn multiple CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and the first since 2009. She now joins Ashley Smith (2003-06) as the only student-athletes in program history to be named Academic All-Americans three times. She’s the first in Carolina’s history to earn multiple first-team selections.

Her 2020 appointment to the first team follows selections to the first team in 2019 and third in 2018.

A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Boesel graduated a year early with a degree in sport and entertainment while maintaining her 4.00 GPA through her first year of graduate school.

Maguire’s selection to the second team is her first Academic All-America honor. She’s the 11th Gamecock in program history to earn Academic All-America honors and the third under head coach Beverly Smith.

A native of Hudson, Fla., Maguire has also maintained her 4.00 GPA through graduate school and is majoring in education technology.

Along with her fellow seniors Lauren Stewart, Cayla Drotar and Maguire, Boesel has announced she will return for an extra year of eligibility in 2021 with the chance to become the first player in program history to become an Academic All-American four times.
