Halloran's First Goal Of The Year Leads Gamecocks To Win Over FAU
Carolina earns first Conference USA win of the year in comeback effort
COLUMBIA, S.C. —- South Carolina men’s soccer fought back from an early deficit to earn its first Conference USA win of the season with a 2-1 victory over FAU on Sunday night at Stone Stadium. Andrew Halloran’s goal at the 51-minute mark off the CJ Mitchell-Smith assist lifted the Gamecocks to the pivotal win that snapped a two-match losing streak to the Owls.
FAU got on the board first, scoring 30 minutes into the match before Luca Mayr’s finish off Halloran’s assist at the 37-minute mark set up the eventual match-winning goal just six minutes into the second half.
With the victory Carolina improved to 6-6-2 (1-4-0 C-USA), including a 6-1-2 mark at home, while the Owls dropped to 4-6-1 (0-4-0).
“I was a little speechless at first,” Halloran said of his first goal in a season that has been filled with numerous close calls and chances. “Then it hit me, and I went straight to my teammates. It was great for team morale and a great result, too.”
In just his third start in goal, Nick Brady earned his first win as a Gamecock with four saves in 90 minutes of action.
On the night, Carolina out-shot the Owls 15-14 while FAU had a 7-4 advantage in corners.
Halloran’s goal was his first of the year while Mayr sent home his second. It was Mitchell-Smith’s first assist as a Gamecock while Halloran had his second of the season.
“It’s great to have the guys in the program going on to other program’s and coaching,” head coach Mark Berson said of FAU’s Joey Worthen. “Joey has done a great job at FAU. It’s difficult in some ways but it’s wonderful overall. It’s wonderful to see him and see the success that he’s had. But you have to be able to flip the switch. It’s a professional arena during the 90 minutes then it’s back. Congrats to him and what he’s done with his program but I was happy for our guys tonight.”
