Men’s Tennis Sends Eight to ITA Regionals
CARY, N.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team attends its second ITA event of the season this week, sending all eight Gamecocks to the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Duke University at Cary Tennis Park from Thursday, Oct. 16 to Monday, Oct. 20.
The tournament field features 64 singles qualifiers, 64 main draw singles players, and 64 doubles teams. Play begins on Thursday with singles qualifying and consolation matches for those who do not advance. Main draw singles and the opening round of doubles will get underway Friday and continue through Monday, when the championship rounds are set to take place. The two singles finalists and doubles champion will qualify for the NCAA Individual Championship in November.
Three Gamecocks earned top 10 seeds in the singles main draw, led by Sean Daryabeigi at No. 4. He’s followed by Lucas da Silva, seeded sixth, and Paul Barbier Gazeu, who holds the No. 10 seed. Charlie Swaine and Atakan Karahan also secured spots, seeded 25th and 32nd, respectively. Gabe Avram and Max Stenzer round out the Garnet & Black representation in the main draw, moving up after being the first and third alternates. Cole Henceroth will compete in the qualifying singles rounds with a chance to grab one of the 16 open spots in the main draw.
For doubles, the duo of Stenzer and Daryabeigi, who earned a preseason ranking of No. 74, lead the squad as the tournament’s No. 2 seed. Gazeu and da Silva will play as the fifth seed followed by Karahan and Swaine at No. 11. Henceroth and Avram round out the Gamecocks’ doubles entries.
