No. 9 Women’s Golf at Bryan National Collegiate

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. — No. 9 South Carolina women’s golf closes its regular season this week at the 2018 Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C. The 54-hole event features an 18-team field at Bryan Park Golf Course. Due to inclement weather this weekend, the tournament will open with 36 holes on Fri., Apr. 6, before the final round is played on either Saturday or Sunday.

“The course is pretty tough in general ââ’¬” it can get windy. We usually play well in tough conditions, so the weather is pretty fitting. We need to be patient. It’s a good, solid field. HISTORY AT THE BRYAN NATIONAL COLLEGIATE

This season marks Carolina’s 15th appearance at the Bryan National Collegiate. The Gamecocks earned runner-up honors in two of their last three showings at the event, grabbing second place in 2014 and 2016. Sophomore Ana Pelaez tied for 14th at the 2017 Bryan National Collegiate, while senior Ainhoa Olarra boasts a pair of top-25 finishes in her two appearances at the tournament.

BREAKING DOWN THE FIELD

Five teams ranked inside the top 25 by Golfstat will be in action at Bryan Park Golf Course. No. 7 Furman and No. 9 South Carolina mark the two top-10 schools, while No. 18 Miami, No. 21 Wake Forest and No. 24 North Carolina round out the list of ranked participants. South Carolina’s Ainhoa Olarra, listed at No. 12 by Golfstat, is one of five top-25 individuals in the field.

LAST TIME OUT

The Gamecocks shared sixth-place honors at the 2018 Evans Derby Experience after posting a 54-hole mark of 866 (+2). Carolina senior standout Ainhoa Olarra tied for third at 7-under 209, while sophomore Lois Kaye Go (T17, -2) also earned a top-20 showing. Olarra and Go shot par or better in each round for the Gamecocks, who led the 12-team field with three eagles.

CHIP SHOTS

– South Carolina enters its 11th season under head coach Kalen Anderson, who has guided the Gamecocks to 10 tournament victories.

– Carolina is one of four schools to reach the NCAA Championship in each of the last eight years, and last spring marked its 17th overall appearance.

– The Gamecocks won the 2017 NCAA Columbus Regional title to earn their third-straight regional championship this past spring.

– Carolina has boasted multiple All-Americans in each of the last four seasons. Eight of the program’s 10 All-Americans have played under Anderson.

– The Gamecocks entered the spring ranked inside the top 15 by Golfstat for the third time in the last five years.

– Eight of Carolina’s 11 tournament victories during Anderson’s tenure have come in the spring.

– Two or more Gamecocks have finished under par in four of Carolina’s seven events this season.

– Carolina’s 288.20 scoring average is on pace to be the lowest single-season mark in program history.

– Ainhoa Olarra ranks in the top five nationally in stroke average (4th) and par-3 scoring (1st). She has shot under par in each of her last 11 rounds.

– Olarra has placed inside the top 25 in 12 of her last 13 events dating back to the start of 2017. The senior sports eight top-10 showings over that time.

UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS

South Carolina opens postseason play at the 2018 SEC Women’s Golf Championship (Apr. 18-22) in Birmingham, Ala. The five-day event at Greystone Golf Club will feature three rounds of stroke play before the field is cut to an eight-team match-play bracket.
