No. 9 Women’s Golf at Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C, — No. 9 South Carolina women’s golf rounds out its fall season this weekend at the 16th annual Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The 54-hole event, which takes place Oct. 27-29, plays host to a competitive 18-team field at the Country Club of Landfall.

HISTORY AT THE LANDFALL TRADITION

This weekend marks the seventh appearance at the Landfall Tradition for the Gamecocks, who have competed at the event every year since 2010. Carolina captured the 2016 Landfall Tradition Title after carding a final-round 280 (-8) and boasting the advantage over Wake Forest in a scorecard playoff last October. Ainhoa Olarra (T9) and Ana Pelaez (T11) grabbed top-15 finishes last year for a Gamecock team that has tallied four top-five showings at the tournament.

BREAKING DOWN THE FIELD

Nine teams ranked inside the top-25 in the latest Golfstat Poll will compete at the Country Club of Landfall. No. 9 South Carolina joins No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Duke, No. 6 Oklahoma State and No. 8 Furman on the list of top-10 participants, while other ranked schools in the field include No. 14 Florida, No. 16 Michigan State, No. 17 Purdue and No. 19 Notre Dame. The Gamecocks, Boilermakers, Spartans, Blue Devils, Cowgirls and Crimson Tide have all notched a victory at the Landfall Tradition.

LAST TIME OUT

Senior standout Ainhoa Olarra led South Carolina to a record-showing performance at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational earlier this month in Chapel Hill, N.C. The San Sebastian, Spain, native, who grabbed runner-up honors after totaling a career-best 205 (-11), helped the Gamecocks finish third with a program-record 846 (-18). Carolina shot par or better each day and led the 18-team field with a 2.87 par-3 scoring average. Gamecock sophomore Lois Kaye Go placed just outside of the top-10 (T11, -6), while junior Marion Veysseyre tied for 23rd place after posting a career-low 214 (-2) at the three-day event.

CHIP SHOTS

– South Carolina enters its 11th season under head coach Kalen Anderson, who has guided the Gamecocks to 10 tournament victories.

– South Carolina’s 3.00 par-3 scoring average (T1) and 4.09 par-4 average (5th) both rank in the top-five among NCAA Division I schools.

– The Gamecocks have posted two of the program’s four lowest 54-hole totals this fall – Landfall Tradition (846, 1st) and Mason Rudolph Championship (853, 4th).

– Sophomore Lois Kaye Go has finished par or better in each of Carolina’s three fall events. Her 71.33 stroke average this season ranks second among Gamecocks.

– Ainhoa Olarra has placed inside the top-25 in nine of her last 10 events dating back to the start of 2017. The senior sports five top-10 showings over that time.
