COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” South Carolina women’s soccer wrapped up its first day camp of the summer Friday, closing out the weeklong event with various games and competitions throughout the morning at Stone Stadium.
It was costume and competition day for the participants, as the campers dressed up in different themes and put on makeup before taking part in a variety of soccer games and scrimmages. The group of over 115 girls ages 5-12 later gathered at midfield, where the champions and spirit award winners for each age group were revealed. Friday’s action concluded with an autograph session when the Gamecocks signed Carolina’s 2017 Schedule Posters for all the campers.
Participants received hands-on training on all aspects of soccer throughout the week. Gamecock players, coaches and other soccer instructors from around the area taught technical skills to the campers each morning before the youth players competed in games and other exercises every afternoon.
This week’s camp is part of Shelley Smith’s Carolina Soccer School, which offers multiple clinics during the summer. The second session of day camps gets underway next month, and there will also be residential and ID camps held in July and August.
