The Will Muschamp Era of South Carolina Football began Tuesday when the Gamecock squad took to the practice fields for the first time to begin spring drills. The team, dressed in garnet helmets and shorts, was greeted by a perfect spring day in the Palmetto State.

“It was a typical first day,” said Coach Muschamp following the first workout. “A lot going on, a lot of anxiety. There are some things we can really coach from off the film. We’ve got a lot to work on, obviously, with the tempo of practice and all those things we need to vastly improve, but we will.”

Muschamp was not surprised by some trepidation with the new schemes and terminology that was being installed. “There were a lot of anxiety out there, a lot of anxious moments, uncertainty of the terminology and new systems,” noted Muschamp. “There’s a lot going on right now. We still have to demand excellence and that’s what we’re trying to do. It’s a work in progress. The biggest thing is a young man or unit cannot get down on themselves at this point,” continued the head coach. “We’re very early in this thing. There are 14 more opportunities to step on the field and get better. We have a lot of opportunities to step in the film room and get better. That’s where we need to make a lot of improvements.”

Coach Muschamp took a minute to reflect on his first practice as the head coach at South Carolina. “I enjoyed it. I worked with the safeties and I really enjoy that part of it. I love coaching football. I enjoy being on the field with our staff. I really like what we’re doing here at South Carolina.”

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Thursday afternoon.
