COLUMBIA, S.C. – On a night that saw all South Carolina student-athletes honored, the women’s soccer team grabbed four of the night’s top honors, and five in total, at the annual Gamecock Gala on Monday at Colonial Life Arena.
Emcee Cara Capuano summed it up best when she noted that the team “continued to clean up [the night’s] award presentation.” It was a fitting way to end a year in which the team produced one of the best seasons in school history, finishing 17-4-2,ranking No. 15 in the NSCAA’s final rankings and going undefeated at home.
Junior Sabrina D’Angelo and senior Elizabeth Sinclair were awarded as the Female Athlete of the Year and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, respectively. As a team, the group earned this year’s Community Service Outreach Team of the Year after totaling 1,187 hours of service, an average of 38 hours per member.
With one of the best seasons in program history after tripling her previous season high in shutouts to 12, D’Angelo became only the second Gamecock to earn both First Team All-America and First Team Scholar All-America honors from the NSCAA in the same season. This came after becoming the first Gamecock to be named one of 15 semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy Award. The Canadian helped guide the Gamecocks to their second highest win total in team history with 17 as the squad finished No. 15 in the nation last fall. She was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in her career and earned All-SEC accolades for the third consecutive season.
Sinclair averaged more than 88 minutes per game throughout her four-year career. The co-captain Liz Sinclair was an integral part of the team’s success in 2013 as the defensive midfielder helped guide her squad to a No. 15 ranking at the end of the season after being picked to finish 10th in the SEC in the preseason coach’s poll. In the classroom, Sinclair embodies what it means to be a student-athlete. A McNair Scholar, she holds a near 4.0 GPA in accounting in the Honors College.
Danielle Au was named the university’s female recipient of the SEC’s Boyd H. McWhorther Post-Graduate Scholarship. She earned her Bachelor of Science in International Business, Entrepreneurship and Economics in December with a 3.9 GPA, while minoring in Chinese and Statistics. A two-time selection to the Capital One Academic All-District IV Team, she was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team during the fall. In her final season on the soccer team, she was selected to the NSCAA All South Region Third Team after scoring seven goals and assisting on four. She finished her career fourth all-time in goals with 23 and points with 59 in Carolina history and was third in game-winning goals with 11.
Voted on by her teammates, Stevi Parker’s commitment and work ethic on and off the field made her invaluable to piece to a Gamecock team that recorded one of the best season’s in program history. Starting all but one game, she scored three goals on the year, one which tied the game in a 2-1 second-half comeback win over Alabama, and the other coming in game-winning fashion in a 2-1 defeat of Auburn.
