MICHOACAN, Mexico – Gamecocks Jeannelle Scheper and Kierre Beckles captured silver at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships. The event features 34 countries from across Central American and the Caribbean.

Scheper, a rising senior, cleared a new lifetime-best 6’3″ ½ (1.92m), setting a new Caribbean junior record for the second time this year. The mark gives Scheper the qualifying B standard for next month’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia. She currently ranks 15th in the 2013 world high jump rankings.

A four-time All-American, Scheper won the 2013 NCAA Indoor silver medal to pair with her 2013 SEC Indoor gold and SEC Outdoor silver medals. Undoubtedly the finest high jumper in South Carolina history, the indoor and outdoor school record holder continues to add to her resume.

Last summer, Scheper won her first international gold medal at the CAC Junior Championships and has since added a CARIFTA gold medal. She placed eighth at last year’s IAAF World Junior Championships.

Beckles also ran at the event for her home country of Barbados. Two weeks after the Gamecock won her country’s 100-meter hurdles national championship, Beckles followed with a CAC silver medal, clocking in at 13.37 (-1.5).

Beckles attained the B standard for the IAAF World Championships at the Raleigh Relays earlier this season with her time of 13.09. The Gamecock was a participant in the 13th IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, in 2011.

South Carolina head coach Curtis Frye along with assistant head coach Delethea Quarles are members of the Team USA coaching staff for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia. They will be joined by former student-athletes Natasha Hastings, Lashinda Demus and Jason Richardson. The event will be held August 10-18.
