COLUMBIA, S.C- The South Carolina volleyball team concluded a perfect weekend sweep of the state of Alabama today with a 3-0 sweep of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Game scores were 30-23, 30-28 and 30-25. Carolina improves to 16-3 overall and 9-3 in the SEC. Nadia Sefferovich again was the difference, posting 13 kills and nine digs to lead Carolina.

Next up is a pair of road matches against Georgia and Florida, beginning Friday night in Athens at 7 pm, and following that with a match against Florida Sunday at 2 pm.

“We beat a good Alabama team today,” said Carolina coach Kim Christopher. “We did a good job of blocking this weekend, as we blocked eight balls today. We played well with a 6’1 offense and a 5’2 offense. I liked what we did today.”

Carolina earned the game one win behind a strong service game and an equally strong offensive attack. The Gamecocks posted five service aces in the game, including three in a row from Cally Plummer. The lead went back and forth until the Gamecocks put it away for good by taking a 26-22 lead. Carolina won the next three out of four points to win the game 30-23.

The second game was closer, but Carolina held on for a 30-28 win. The Gamecocks again took an early lead, but the Tide came back to close the gap. USC jumped out to a 29-25 lead, but Alabama won the next three points in a row to make the score 29-28. Carolina ended the game on a Yajaira Cadet kill to put Carolina within one game of winning the match.

The third stanza was more of a challenge, as Carolina was faced with a 17-12 deficit. However, the Gamecocks, in the midst of an 11-2 run, won the next five points to tie the game at 17, then took a 23-19 lead on a Plummer kill to end the run. The lead grew to as high as 27-21, and Carolina ended it on a Berna Dwyer kill to end the game at 30-25.

Plummer finished the match with nine kills and four digs, while Cadet finished with eight kills and eight digs. The Gamecocks hit .269 to the Tide’s .170, and blocked eight balls in the win.
