COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Defending boys’ 18 singles division champion Joseph Carvalho of Rock Hill advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight-sets victory Sunday in the third day of the Wachovia South Carolina Closed Junior Hardcourt Championships, being held on the University of South Carolina campus.

Play continues through Wednesday at four sites – the Columbia Tennis Center, Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center (USC women’s courts), Sam Daniel Tennis Center (USC men’s courts) and USC Indoor Facility. Monday’s action begins at 8 a.m. and runs through approximately 8 p.m.

Carvalho, the top seed, downed Chapin’s Bennett Evers, 6-0, 6-2 to advance to Monday’s quarterfinal matchup against Charleston’s Taylor Calcote, a 6-2, 6-3, winner of Michael Barber of Aiken, 6-2, 6-3. A pair of doubles teams was crowned champions on the girls side Sunday. In the 16s competition, Sarah Hickman and Brittany Lanford downed Lee-Deane Elmore of Chapin and Lauren Prickett of Columbia, 8-2; while in the 18s, top-seeded Lauren Brown of Gaffney and Tara Hartness of Greenville cruised past Kim Jamieson and Mary Kathryn Powell of Greenville, 8-4.

More than 350 of the state’s top junior tennis players are taking part in the annual event, as boys and girls compete in five different age divisions – 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s – in both singles and doubles action.
