  • Daniel Weaver’s 28-yard field goal with 1:54 left in the first quarter was his first successful attempt since going 2-of-2 against New Mexico State …Weaver did not attempt field goals in the Virginia and Temple games and was 0-of-1 against Georgia … Weaver now is 3-of-4 this season and 17-of-23 on field goal attempts for his career.
  • The second-quarter touchdown catch by Troy Williamson was the true freshman’s second in as many weeks.
  • Dondrial Pinkins’ second-quarter TD pass to Troy Williamson was the third of his career and the first of the 2002 season.
  • Ryan Brewer’s third-down reception of 20 yards is his 29th-straight game with a reception … The South Carolina record for consecutive games with at least one reception is 34 held by Jermale Kelly and Sterling Sharpe.
  • The third-and-16 conversion from Corey Jenkins to Michael Ages (29 yards) was the first time this season that the Gamecocks have converted a third down of 11 yards or more.
  • South Carolina suffered numerous injuries to its offensive line in the first half, including Cedric Williams (neck strain, returned), Shane Hall (neck strain, did not return) and Watts Sanderson (ankle, returned).

Vanderbilt Game Notes

  • Guests in the press box included George and Betty MacIntyre and George and Nancy Bennett. Coach Mac was head coach at Vanderbilt from 1979 – 1985, compiled a 25-52 record and led the Commodores to the Hall of Fame Bowl in 1982. VU owned an 8-4 record that year, 4-2 in the SEC for a third place finish.
  • MacIntyre was VU Head Coach Bobby Johnson’s position coach at Clemson from 1971-72.
  • Tonight’s game is the Vanderbilt Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day – over 7,500 tickets were requested for today’s game from VU faculty and staff. Beverly Brothers, administrative assistant to Brad Bates (senior associate director of athletics) was honored at halftime with the Commodore Award. Howard Thompson of the Medical Center was also a recipient. The Commodore Award is the highest honor for a Vanderbilt staff member.
  • Jonathan Shaub picked off a Corey Jenkins pass in the second quarter – the first for the Commodores this season and the second career pick for Shaub.
