Columbia, S.C. – Tim Glowienka scored in the 74th minute to give the Gamecocks a 2-1 victory over Charlotte tonight at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. South Carolina improves to 8-3-1, while the 49ers fall to 7-4-1.
Charlotte jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Tim Flavin and Mira Mupier connected for the 49ers’ lone goal at 8:04. Flavin served the ball to Mupier who slipped it past goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer.
Just four minutes later, the Gamecocks answered Charlotte when Jordan Quinn scored his sixth goal of the season. Quinn blasted the ball to the upper left-hand corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. USC would enter halftime locked at 1-1.
At 73:16 Glowienka netted his first goal of the season off a direct kick to score the game-winning goal. The 49ers were unable to capitalize on a few last minute opportunities.
“It is an important win for us against a team that is in contention for the NCAA Tournament,” commented Head Coach Mark Berson. “It was also important for us to be able to rebound and earn a win at home.”
The 11th-ranked Gamecocks dominated play, outshooting the 49ers, 13-7, while tallying a 6-0 corner kick advantage.
South Carolina heads to Piscataway, N.J. to take on the 25th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
