Charlottesville, Va. – The South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams suffered the first lost off the 2002-03 season, falling to Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The men’s squad was defeated 129-109, while the women’s team lost 131-107. Carolina returns home on Friday evening at 5 p.m. vs. Kentucky at the Carolina Natatorium.
The meet for Carolina was highlighted by sophomore diver Andy Bradley. Bradley won both the one-meter (315.23) and three-meter boards (354.23), while setting a new pool record at the UVA Aquatics Center on the three-meter. Sophomore Dean Emmerton finished second to Bradley on both the one-meter (314.10) and three-meter (313.45) as well. Freshman Ian Balman finished third on the three-meter board for USC.
The South Carolina women’s team also found success on the diving side, with sophomores Lauren King and Tracey Richardson each earning a first place finish. King took first place on the one-meter with a score of 311.48, while Richardson earned first on the three-meter with a 318.53. Junior Holly Hodges placed second on the one-meter (279.23) and third on the three-meter (293.85).
Junior Chris McCrary continued his success in the sprint events for USC with a first place finish in the 50 freestyle. McCrary finished with a time of 20.45 and also earned second in the 100 freestyle. Also earning first for USC was Tamas Szucs in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.12.
On the women’s side, junior Anna Nyiry posted the fastest time for USC this season in the 50 freestyle. On her way to a second place finish Nyiry posted a time of 23.59. Freshman Stephanie Margalis also continued to swim well in the 200 freestyle with a second place finish at 1:50.63, just hundreths of seconds off her top time set last week. Heather Skaggs also placed second for Carolina in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.14.
