COLUMBIA, S.C. – Newcomer Kerbrell Brown scored 19 points and went 9-for-11 for the night while Carlos Powell added 16 points as South Carolina rolled over Unibanka Cesis of Latvia 105-67 in the final collegiate game to be played at Frank McGuire Arena Wednesday night. Chuck Eidson and Tarence Kinsey both had 15 points as the Gamecocks ended their exhibition schedule with a win.

Carolina shot 55.2% from the field and held Unibanka Cesis to only a 36.4% shooting percentage. John Chappell, Chris Warren, and Marius Petravicius all scored ten points. Senior Michael Boynton added two points and five steals. Carolina recorded 19 steals to Unibanka Cesis’ four.

“Obviously it was a good night for us,” commented Carolina Head Coach Dave Odom. “This gave us an opportunity to look at some young players. I think we saw that some progress has been made with our younger players. We got off to a great start. Our team shot the ball well early on. I think we’ve got a chance to do that this year (shoot the ball well). The key was we passed and cut exceptionally well. It seemed like we always had a guy open.”

Carolina started the game with an 11-0 run as for the second straight game Eidson snatched the ball off the initial jump and took it down the court for an immediate two points. Carolina then went on a 14-0 run to take an early 31-4 lead. South Carolina recorded 16 points off turnovers and never gave up the lead. The Gamecock bench made a strong showing, scoring 27 points in the half. Brown went 6-8 from the field in the half.

The Gamecocks started off the second half a little slower but still never relented. Speed was the name of the game in the second half as Carolina scored 14 fast break points. Carolina went on another run midway through the half, going 13-4, which was capped off by a jump shot by Kinsey.

This was the final collegiate game to be played in the Carolina Coliseum and Frank McGuire Arena. South Carolina opens up the 2002-03 regular season against East Tennessee State Nov. 24 at the Carolina Center.
