Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina softball recently received two letters of intent for the 2003 season. Head coach Joyce Compton announced the signings of Brookland-Cayce’s McKenna Hughes and Christina Schoonmaker of Sebastian, Fla. Hughes helped lead BC to the 2000 and 2002 State Championships, while Schoonmaker is a two-time all-conference selection from Sebastian River H.S.

Hughes, who hails from Lexington, S.C., is a shortstop that earned a 2000 Golden Glove and was the 2001team batting champion. She is also a two-time all-state selection, a three-time all-area team selection and a two-time all-region team selection. Hughes plays for the Carolina Dynamites travel team, coached by Dwayne Jones. Her high school coach is Richard Lundy.

Schoonmaker is a 5-7 shortstop from Sebastian River H.S. in Florida. Coached by Steve Courtney, Schoonmaker helped lead her team to the District 14 championships. Schoonmaker is also a letterman in track, soccer and volleyball. Schoonmaker also plays travel ball for Plantation Gold and is coached by Marty Cooper.
