Columbia, S.C. – The Southeastern Conference announced South Carolina junior Stacey Johnson SEC Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 16. Johnson went 1-0 over the weekend with a 0.60 ERA and struck out seven batters as she led the No. 14 Gamecocks to a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 8 LSU. Johnson pitched 10 innings, the longest outing by any Carolina pitcher this season, for her fifth complete game of the season.
Her victory was South Carolina’s first over a top 10 team this year and also snapped a five-game losing streak to the Tigers. This is the Newtown, Pa. native’s first pitcher of the week honor during her career, Carolina’s second POW honor of the year. Freshman Melanie Henkes earned recognition back in February.
The Gamecocks (19-7, 3-2 SEC) are off this weekend and return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for a three-game series with the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks.
