ATHENS, Ga. – Two Carolina doubles teams recorded upset victories in the Division II doubles quarterfinals at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia Sunday. The duos of Carl Wermee and Ben Atkinson along with Geraldo Knorr and Rob Cassidy both advance to Monday’s semifinals and a possible all South Carolina Division II final doubles match.

Wermee and Atkinson, seeded seventh, teamed up to upset Edstrom and Legros from Lander, who were seeded fourth, 8-2. They will face eighth-seeded Brown and Heinberg of Duke who defeated the second-seeded pair of Timu and VanLoan from the host Georgia Bulldogs, 8-2.

Meanwhile, Knorr and Cassidy paired up to notch an 8-4 win over sixth-seeded Fomine and Armstrong from Mississippi State. They advance to face the fifth-seeded team of Bucewicz and Tomla from Memphis, who beat the top-seeded Florida pair of Brandi and Dolberg, 8-4. The winners of the two matches will face in a final match Monday.

In the Consolation bracket in Division II singles, Carl Wermee advanced to the finals with a pair of wins over Gators Sunday. Wermee defeated Chris Brandi of Florida 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (7) in the quarterfinals early on. Wermee then notched a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6) win over Jordan Dolberg, also of Florida. Wermee faces Greg Sossaman (Vanderbilt) in the Division II consolation finals match.

Play continues at the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championships Monday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens.
