COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina freshman golfer David Kite will be in action this weekend when he teams with his father, PGA Touring Pro, Tom Kite for the fifth-straight year in the annual Office Depot Father/Son Challenge in Championsgate, Fla. The four-day event will be contested Dec. 4-7, at the par-72, 7,119-yard International Course at the ChampionsGate Golf Resort.
Tournament activities begin with a two-day pro-am on Thursday, Dec. 5 and Friday, Dec. 5. The 36-hole tournament, played as a two-man scramble format, will be Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7. NBC will televise the event on Saturday from 3-5 p.m. ET and on Sunday, from 4-6 p.m. ET.
The younger Kite, who is redshirting during the 2003-04 season, first teamed with his father in the Father/Son Challenge as a 15-year-old high school freshman and has been part of the event ever since. A year ago, the duo tied for eighth in the 19-team field with a 36-hole score of 64-63—137.
This year, 15 teams will join the Kites in competing for the Willie Park Trophy and the $1 million in prize money that is divided among the competing teams. Included in that list are defending champions Craig and Kevin Stadler, Seve and Javier Ballesteros, Berhard and Stefan Langer, Hale and Steve Irwin, Tom and Michael Watson, Lee and Tony Trevino, Mark and Shaun O’Meara, Johnny and Scott Miller, Vijay and Qass Singh, five-time champions Raymond and Raymond Floyd, Jr., and Arnold Palmer and grandson Sam Saunders.
In order to be eligible for the Office Depot Father/Son Challenge, all of the fathers must have one a major championship on the PGA Tour.
