The opening round of the 2004 Wachovia Junior Davis Cup saw all but two of the top eight seeds advance. Pacific Northwest upset No. 6 seed Midwest, 4-3 while Northern California upset No. 8 seed Intermountain, 5-2 on Saturday at the Columbia Tennis Center.

Pacific Northwest took the top three single matches from Midwest before claiming the victory in doubles. Kurt Zaske and Stewart defeated Peter Kung and Joel Kincaid 8-6 at the number two doubles position to clinch the upset. In singles, the contest had three of the six singles matches go three sets. The Pacific Northwest and Midwest match would be the only close match of the day as the top seeds would advance in style.

Southern California, the tournaments top seed defeated Southwest 5-2 to advance to play Northern California. The two teams will square off on Sunday at the Sam Daniels Tennis Center at 2 p.m. One of the two points lost for Southern California came at the number one singles position where Dan Nguyen, ranked 77th in the country in the boys’ 18 singles by the USTA, upset sixth ranked Kacs Van’t Hof in three sets, 4-6,6-4,6-2. Van’t Hof was the highest ranked player in this year’s 2004 Wachovia Junior Davis Cup. Texas and Southern swept their opponents while Florida defeated Eastern 5-2 to advance.

The 2004 Wachovia Junior Davis Cup will continue tomorrow starting at 8:00am at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center and the Columbia Tennis Center. All championship matches will be played at Sam Daniels while back draw contest will be played at the Columbia Tennis Center.
