Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team edged the Mississippi Rebels on Friday, 4-3. The win improved the Gamecocks to 11-6 overall and to 5-4 in SEC play while the Rebels dropped to 11-7 on the season and 4-5 in conference play.

In doubles, Mississippi took an early 1-0 lead by taking two of the three doubles matches. Ilona Somers and Mimi Renaudin took an 8-5 win against Fallon Koon and Christyn Lucas at No. 2 doubles. Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis clinched the doubles point by taking an 8-5 win at one over Danielle Wiggins and Miranda Gutierrez. Carolina would pick up their only doubles win at three where Magda Wojdylo and Megan McGavock defeated Nika Koukhartchouk and Preethi Subramanian 8-6.

Mississippi would go up 3-0 before Carolina would take their first singles win in the match. Mimi Renauden defeated Fallon Koon 6-1,6-2 at five and 43rd-ranked Chloe Carlotti took a 6-2,6-2 victory over Danielle Wiggins at one. Carolina would rally to take the final four matches on the court to take the match 4-3.

Magda Wojdylo got the Gamecocks on the board with her two set victory over Virginia Tomatis. Wojdylo was down 5-1 in the first set but stormed back to take the set 7-5 and then rolled to a 6-1 win in the second stanza. Megan McGavock took a 6-3,6-2 win at six to cut the Rebel lead to 3-2. Miranda Gutierrez took the first set at No. 3 singles, 6-4, and rallied in the final games to force a set tie break in the second set where she held off 64th-ranked Nika Kouhartchouk 7-3 in the tie-breaker. The score was then tied 3-3 so the match then came down to the No. 2 singles match between 94th-ranked Christyn Lucas and Ilona Somers.

Lucas took the first set 6-3 and would have a 3-1 lead in the second set but Somers rallied to take the next five games to take a 6-3 win in the second stanza. In the third set, Somers jumped out early taking an 1-0 lead but Lucas would come right back to take the next six games to clinch the overall dual match for the Gamecocks with a 6-1 win in the third set.

The Gamecocks return to action on Sunday when they host the 22nd-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs at 1:00 P.M. The match on Sunday is Senior Day and the three USC seniors will be honored prior to Sunday’s match.
