Box Score

Clemson, S.C. – Nicole Labuda’s goal at 81:50 broke a 1-1 tie as Charlotte (3-3) defeated South Carolina (3-3) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Carolina Cup. Darcel Mollon scored her second goal of the season for USC in the loss. The Gamecocks return to action next Sunday afternoon as they host Miami (Fla.) at 11 a.m. at Stone Stadium.

South Carolina controlled play for most of the match finishing with a 15-4 shot advantage as well as ending the afternoon with a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Carolina would go ahead first in the match at 38:07 with Mollon giving USC the one-goal edge. After M.A. Foster broke through the Charlotte defense, Mollon was able to control the ball just above the right corner of the “18” and knocked a shot to the high left corner of the goal and past 49ers goalkeeper Ariel Baniowski.

The lead would be short for USC though as Charlotte knotted the match at one apiece at 39:14. After a Gamecock foul, Charlotte midfielder Lindsey Beam served a long set piece into the box where Kelsie Ormsby was able to get a foot on the ball at the six-yard box and past USC goalkeeper Lindsay Thorstenson for a goal.

It would remain 1-1 until the 82nd minute as Charlotte went ahead with the game-winning ball. A long diagonal ball from Kelsie Ormsby found its way into the “18” and past the USC defense. Nicole Labuda was able to get in from eight yards out and put a shot past Thorstenson giving the 49ers the one-goal lead.

Mollon almost got her second goal of the day late into the match but was denied by Baniowski. Carolina found themselves in the box several times in the last few minutes but could not score the second goal to tie the match.

Baniowski had four saves in goal with Thorstenson finishing with one. Mollon and Ashley Kirk each had three shots to lead Carolina on the offensive attack.
