MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite out-shooting Memphis 26-18 and forcing the Tigers to make 10 saves, the South Carolina men’s soccer team played to a 2-2 draw on Friday night in Conference USA action at Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn.

With its first tie of the season, Carolina’s record now stands at 4-5-1 and 1-0-1 in C-USA play. Memphis is 4-4-2 and 0-1-2 in league games.

South Carolina came back from a one-goal deficit at the half to take a 2-1 lead, but the Tigers scored a goal in the 88th minute to force overtime. Neither team was able to find the back of the net during two extra periods and the match ended at 2-2.

Memphis struck early when Andy Metcalf tallied his eighth goal of the season in the fifth minute. Gamecock goalkeeper Mike Gustavson made the stop on Metcalf’s shot, but the ball was ruled to have already crossed the goal line.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the half, but South Carolina battled back.

Junior Ralph Pace scored his second goal of the season on an assist from senior Josh Alcala at the 60:37 mark. Pace’s shot deflected off a Memphis defender and bounced over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to tie the match a one. Alcala leads the Carolina with 10 points and six assists.

The Gamecocks claimed a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute on junior Ryan Leeton’s penalty kick. The goal was the first of Leeton’s career.

Memphis fired back at the 87:54 mark as Robert Sausaman scored on an assist from Cormac McArdle.

USC kept Tiger goalkeeper Tyler Strom busy, pressuring him to make 10 saves on the night. Carolina freshman goalie Mike Gustavson made one save in the match.

Carolina’s weekend road trip continues on Sunday with a Conference USA match at UAB. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at West Campus Field in Birmingham, Ala.
