Columbia, S.C. – A pair of South Carolina men’s tennis players joined USC senior Tom Eklund in the last 16 of the top singles flight, and two Gamecock doubles teams earned their way into Saturday’s semifinals on Friday at the USC Fall Invitational in Columbia. Day one featured several great matches and the 26 teams and over 150 players enjoyed an absolutely perfect day in Columbia with temperatures hovering around 80 with clear skies all day long.

Sophomore Jaime Cuellar and senior Geraldo Knorr both defeated tough opponents in three sets in the opening round of 32 singles in the tournament’s top singles flight. Cuellar, the 4th seed in the draw, and Knorr will join 15th-ranked and top-seeded Tom Eklund in the round of 16 on Saturday. Eklund will take on Brian Crook of Furman, Cuellar will face Vincent Patry of Georgia Southern, and Knorr will look across the net at South Carolina State’s Andrew Mawire.

In doubles action, top-seeded Cueller and Knorr paired up to defeat Ionut Hurduc and Dimitry Lomakin of SCSU 8-2 to advance to the semis, while senior Kazuya Otani and sophomore Joe Veeder won their first two matches as a team, defeating Gardner-Webb’s Ellis and Phillip in the quarters after knocking off third-seeded Olmedo and Vaccarin of Jacksonville State.

Play resumes tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. on the courts at the Columbia Tennis Center and at 8:30 a.m. at the Sam Daniels Tennis Center and the Maxcy-Gregg Tennis Center.
