AUBURN, Ala. – South Carolina women’s golf closed out at 13-over-par 301 Friday at The Derby Invitational, held at the Auburn University Club, to sit alone in seventh place at the end of first round action.

Tournament host Auburn leads the field of 12 teams from the SEC and ACC out of 17 overall with a three-over-par 291. SEC or ACC schools posted 12 of the top 13 scores heading into second round action Saturday.

Senior Erica Battle led the way for the Gamecocks with a two-over-par 74, good enough to be tied for 13th at the end of 18 holes. The Irmo native had a steady round shooting par on 14 holes.

Sophomore Camila Mori sits just one stroke behind Battle after shooting a three-over-par 75, which put her tied for 19th on the individual leaderboard. The total marked the 3rd best round overall and the best opening day round for Mori since transferring to South Carolina from Campbell University where she earned Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year honors last spring.

Senior Laura McCaslin and sophomore Whitney Simons put four-over-par 76s down on their score cards Friday. 76 was just 3 strokes away from being amongst the top 10 individual rounds for the day.

Junior Jenna Pearson added one more stroke to the day’s total of McCaslin and Simons, ending up with a five-over-par 77.

Sophomore Laura Raffo is competing as an individual at the Gamecocks final event for the fall season and her score is therefore not counted towards the team total. The native Argentinean will look to improve upon her total of nine-over-par 81 during Saturday’s action.
