A record-tying 12 of the University of South Carolina’s 17 athletic programs posted a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better for the Fall 2005 semester, it was announced today. The overall mean GPA of its 473 student-athletes was 2.978, the highest on record.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our student-athletes,” said Carolina Athletics Director Eric Hyman. “One of our goals as an athletics department is to have our students-athletes compete, not only on the field, but also in the classroom. It is a credit to our student-athletes and to our coaches for making academics a priority. Carolina had the highest number of Southeastern Conference academic honor roll student-athletes in the spring,” Hyman noted, “and this only builds on that accomplishment.”

For the fifth consecutive year, the women’s golf team led the way with a team GPA of 3.749. The softball (3.506), women’s track & field (3.295) and baseball (3.195) teams had their highest team GPA on record.
