Columbia, SC – USC’s track and field teams opened the indoor season Friday at the Virginia Tech Invitational. USC continues competition at the meet with most finals being contested tomorrow on the track.

Both Amberly Nesbit (7.27) and Shalonda Solomon (7.44) advanced to the semi-finals of the 60m. Later, Nesbit (7.26) and Solomon (7.42) both won their heats in the semi-finals to advance to Saturday’s finals.

Also finding success were USC’s 60m hurdlers with Ronetta Alexander (8.35) and Trier Young (8.88) winning their heats. Chelsea Hammond and Brittney James also advanced to the semi-finals. Later on Friday night, Chelsea Hammond (8.55), Kettiany Clarke (8.57), Trier Young (8.68) and Chiquita Martin (8.74) advanced to tomorrow’s finals.

Kemesha Whitmire was second in her flight of the triple jump, hitting the pit at 41′ 1/4 – the second best mark of the day. On the men’s side, Greg Cryer was third in his heat of the triple jump, also posting the third best mark of the day at 51′ 2.

USC had two athletes jump 5’5 to finish third in the high jump with Chelsea Hammond and Monica Bozenski both competing in the high jump. Cheryl Terrio was third in the pole vault at 12′ 8 in her first competition of the year.

Precious Akins was fourth in the 20lb. weight, tossing it 58′ 9. On the men’s side, Brook Antonio threw the weight 19.24m – fourth best of the day.

USC’s Jon Hannock (6.87) and Leroy Dixon (63′ 1) both advanced to the semi-finals of the 60m.

Chelsea Kaczmarek (40.88) and Faraign Giles (39.94) both won their heat of the 300 Also winning her heat in the 1000m was Rebecca Chain (3:04.66).
