Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s basketball team (17-10 overall; 7-7 Southeastern Conference) is set to enter this week’s Southeastern Conference Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will face 10th-seeded Auburn (13-14 overall; 4-10 SEC) at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time in first-round action played Thursday at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, Ark.
The winner of Thursday’s game faces No. 2 seed Tennessee at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, with the winner of that game facing either Alabama, Vanderbilt or Georgia in the semi-final round.
South Carolina beat Auburn, 58-46 in the only regular-season meeting between the two schools, played in Auburn on Feb. 16. The game was a defensive struggle with points coming at a premium, and the same can be expected when the two teams hook up at the SEC Tournament, as both teams rank among the conference leaders in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. Lea Fabbri led the Gamecocks with 13 points in the previous meeting, with Shannel Harris scoring 10 points of her own, including a pair of back-breaking jumpers that helped seal the Carolina win.
Thursday’s game will be a showcase for some of the top young talent in the SEC, as South Carolina’s Demetress Adams and Auburn’s DeWanna Bonner and KeKe Carrier are all very likely candidates to earn spots on the SEC All-Freshman team.
All games at the SEC Tournament will be televised live by Fox Sports South, with the exception of the championship game, which will be televised by ESPN2.
