SANDWICH, England – South Carolina rising sophomore Florian Fritsch is competing in the match play portion of the British Amateur Championship this week. The tournament started with 288 amateur golfers from all over the world competing in two rounds of stroke play. The field was whittled to the top 64, including ties for 64th, before continuing on to match play.

A native of Germany, Fritsch had a first round bye in match play before defeating Kevin Chappell (USA) in the second round, 7&6. He battles Dale Whitnell (Forester Park, England) on Thursday in the third round of match play.

Fritsch shot a one-over par 72 in round one, which was played on the Prince’s Course in Dover England. In the second round, played at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, he fired a six-over par 77, to place in a tie for 39th.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are Friday, with the championship match taking place on Saturday.

Incoming freshman George Bryan IV was also invited to compete in the event. The Chapin, S.C., product carded rounds of 76 and 86 during stroke play, but did not advance to the match play bracket.

Elmore Places Second at South Carolina Match Play Championship:
Rising sophomore Baker Elmore produced a runner-up finish at the South Carolina Match Play Championship on June 18 at Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. Elmore defeated Ben Karns in the semifinals before falling to Adam Hart in the championship match, 3&2.
