In spite of several interruptions by severe thunderstorms, USC’s track and field team advanced Natasha Hastings to the semi-finals of the 400m. The men’s and women’s 100m prelims have been delayed by severe storms with Leroy Dixon and Shalonda Solomon set to compete in the short sprint (may be post-poned until Friday).
Hastings, running in the fastest heat of the day, was fifth in her heat of the prelims at 52.17 and advanced to the semi-finals on Friday at 6:30 pm.
“I was not too pleased with my execution, but I am grateful to make it back to the semi-finals,” said Hastings. “I don’t know why, but maybe I lost focus. I have to stay focused, say my prayers and everything will fall into place.”
Thomas Hilliard was fifth in his heat at 50.93, finishing 18th overall. He did not advance as top 16 advance. Former All-American Gamecock Kenneth Ferguson won his heat to advance to the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles at 49.66.
Rising sophomore Brittney James was fifth in the juniors long jump, hitting the sand at 19′ 5 3/4.
“She put together the most consistent series of the year today,” said USC jumps coach Dee Quarles.
