ABOUT THE WEEK

SETTING THE SCENE: The South Carolina volleyball team will look to erase its two-match skid at Georgia on Wednesday when it faces the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. The Gamecocks are 9-6 this season and 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference following a pair of losses at LSU and Arkansas. Georgia went 0-2 over the weekend with losses to LSU and Arkansas to fall to 4-10 and 0-4 in the SEC.

SOUTH CAROLINA’S LAST TIME OUT: South Carolina dropped a 3-1 (23-30, 23-30, 30-28, 24-30) decision in Fayetteville, Ark., on Sunday to the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks. The Gamecocks recorded their lowest hitting percentage of the year at .091 (54-39-165), but did manage to out-dig Arkansas 71-59. Sophomore outside hitter Marija Milosevic led the team in kills with a season-high 23 on 59 attempts. It was just the second time in her career that she recorded at least 20 in a match. Senior outside hitter Shonda Cole pitched in 20 kills for her seventh 20-kill match of the season, and she notched her fourth double-double in 2006 with a dozen digs. Senior libero Alexcis Thomson dug a career-high 26 balls, which was a single-match best for all South Carolina players this year. Sophomore setter Petra Lorenzi filled in for starter Iris Santos, who went down with an ankle injury in game one, by tallying 49 assists and six digs. Lorenzi fell three shy of tying her career-high for assists.

LAST TIME THEY MET: South Carolina and Georgia last met on Oct. 30, 2005, in Columbia, S.C., and the Bulldogs were able to escape with a 3-2 (30-22, 24-30, 30-24, 22-30, 9-15) victory for the second time that season. Marija Milosevic poured in a career-high 28 kills in the defeat, while Shonda Cole and Iris Santos added 17 and 15. Petra Lorenzi started at setter and posted a career-high with 52 assists.

THE GEORGIA SERIES: Georgia leads the all-time series with South Carolina by a 38-12 margin and is 21-11 against the Gamecocks since they joined the Southeastern Conference in 1991. The Bulldogs have won six straight dating back to 2003 and won last year’s two meetings by 3-2 scores. Prior to losing the last six to Georgia, Carolina won seven of eight in the series.

GOING FOR 100: South Carolina head coach Nancy Somera will go for her 100th career win Wednesday, as she is currently at 99 victories. Now in her second season at USC, she has won 22 matches with the Gamecocks and tallied 77 at the helm of Oregon State.
