LYNCHBURG, Va. — South Carolina track and field sophomore Kettiany Clarke finished in second place at the On Track Open in Lynchburg, Va., Friday. Clarke tallied 3,713 points for a provisional NCAA qualifying mark, and it was the second-best total of her collegiate career.
Clarke finished first or second in four of the five events during the day. She took first in the long jump with a leap of 18-7 1/4 and placed second in the high jump with a 5-5 clearance. In the 60-meter hurdles, Clarke was second with a time of 8.66 and her 32-5 1/2 effort in the shot put was good for second as well. She took fourth place in the 800-meter run.
Senior Reanna Townsend finished fourth in the pentathlon by accumulating 3,141 points. She was third in the 60m hurdles, high jump and long jump. Townsend recorded the top mark in the shot put with a heave of 34-4.
“Reanna had a good day and Kettiany was very solid,” assistant head coach Dee Quarles said. “I was very happy that Kettiany got on the provisional list for nationals. We’re looking forward to SECs and improving our scores.”
On the men’s side, sophomore Curt McGill stands in first place in the heptathlon heading into day two. McGill was first in the high jump with a 6-0 3/4 mark and also placed first in the shot put with a throw of 45-4 1/4. His 60mH time of 7.43 was second, as was his long jump of 19-10 1/2. He compiled 2,720 points on the day.
The On Track Open continues Saturday, and other members of the Gamecock track and field team will compete in Gainesville, Fla., at the Diet Pepsi Invitational.
