CLEMSON, S.C. — Members of the South Carolina track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the Tiger Classic in Clemson, S.C., on Friday. The meet concludes Saturday.

Freshman Aaron Searles improved his marks in the long jump for the fourth consecutive meet. He leaped 22-1 1/2 in the prelims to finish eighth and then hit the pit with the same distance in the finals to earn eighth as well. Classmate Eddie Stoudemire, a multi-event athlete, was 16th during the prelims with a mark of 20-10 3/4. It was his first long jump competition of the year.

Stoudemire also raced in the 60-meter hurdles and ran 8.58 in the prelims for 19th place.

Redshirt senior Jim Mitchell was the only other male Gamecock to compete Friday, partaking in the shot put. He threw 49-9 in the prelims and upped his throw to 51-6 1/2 in the finals to finish in fifth place.

Four women competed in the pole vault with two Gamecocks, sophomore Liza Todd and freshman Sallie Gurganus, clearing 11-11 3/4. Gurganus has improved her clearance in the pole vault for five straight weeks. Redshirt sophomore Emily Pease and redshirt freshman CaAdrian Norman also competed, posting marks of 10-6 and 10-0 to finish 12th and 14th.

Two of Carolina’s multi-event athletes on the women’s side, sophomore Kettiany Clarke and senior Reanna Townsend, threw the shot put Friday. Clarke had a heave of 34-8 1/4, while Townsend made a toss of 32-8 1/2.

South Carolina also fielded a distance medley relay team that finished in third place with a time of 12:24.32.
