Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – McKenna Hughes recorded career home run No. 23 to lead the South Carolina softball team to a 4-0 win over North Florida. With the win, USC improved to 2-0 at the FAU Miken Invitational and outscored their opponents 7-0 on the day. Junior Kate Pouliot (1-0) pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and one walk as the Gamecocks handed the Ospreys open their season 0-1.

UNF’s Tori Ahren pitched four innings and gave up three runs on six hits to go 0-1. Hughes put the Gamecocks on the board in the first inning with a one out, two run home run to give USC a 2-0 lead. With the home run, Hughes is one home run shy of tying South Carolina’s all-time career record. The record which stands at 24, is held by former standout Joyce McMillin.

USC added another run in the fourth when freshman Lindsay Walker led off the inning with a solo home run, the first of her career. The Gamecocks’ final run of the game came in the seventh inning. Hughes, who went 2-for-4 for the game, singled to right field, but UNF’s Kara Rutenbar bobbled the ball, which allowed Adele Voigt to score from third. Voigt reached base after she drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Designated player Melissa Hendon also went 2-for-4 at the plate and went 3-for-7 on the day, including two doubles. Junior Jessica Josker also recorded a double to give the Gamecocks five for the day.

South Carolina returns to action on Saturday when they play Miami (Ohio) at 4 p.m. and FAU at 8 p.m.
