MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – With no outs in the first inning, South Carolina scored six runs to set the scene for its five-inning 11-0 victory over College of Charleston Thursday evening. The win gave the Gamecocks the doubleheader sweep as they improved to 10-2 on the season and the Cougars fell to 5-6. Kate Pouliot is now 6-0 while Shannon Howard is now 1-4.

South Carolina batted through the lineup in the first inning with Ashton Payne leading the way. Payne recorded two hits in the inning and went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Payne has now hit in 11 of 12 games this season. Lindsay Walker and Becky Martines both went 3-for-4. Walker also had three runs and three RBI, while Martinez had two RBI and one run. Jacqueline Wetherbee contributed and went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

As a team, USC recorded a season high, 11 runs, on 12 hits. The Garnet and Black scored two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to seal the shutout win.

Pouliot held C of C to two hits as she recorded her second shutout of the season. Amber Shifflett was the only Cougar to get a hit off of Pouliot as she went 2-for-3. Howard pitched 4.2 innings and gave up the 11 runs. Nine of them were earned.

USC is now 6-0 in its series against C of C. This is the first run-rule victory for the Gamecocks since the 9-1 win over Canisius on March 4, 2006.

The Gamecocks return to action this weekend when they host the Gamecock Invitational, Feb. 24-25. USC will open against Jacksonville State at Noon.
