LEXINGTON, Ky. — The 2007 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships began Friday evening for the South Carolina Gamecocks in Lexington, Ky., at Nutter Field House. Sophomore Kettiany Clarke finished in sixth place in the women’s pentathlon with 3,653 points, while senior Reanna Townsend was eighth overall with a PR 3,434 points. In the men’s heptathlon, sophomore Curt McGill is in fourth place with 2,941 points after four of seven events, and freshman Eddie Stoudemire resides in sixth with 2,767 points.
Clarke opened her pentathlon by winning the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.57 to score 1,002 points. Townsend tallied 929 thanks to an 8.91 run that placed sixth. The high jump saw Clarke finish third with her best jump of the year at 5-5 3/4 for 818 points, while Townsend cleared 5-2 1/4 to record 712 points.
Heading into the shot put, Clarke resided in second place and was 88 points out of first behind LSU’s Shaunette Davidson. Townsend sat in ninth and stood 29 points from eighth. Clarke struggled in the shot, tallying 473 points with a throw of 30-0 on her final attempt after fouling on the first two. Townsend took fourth in the event thanks to a 36-4 3/4 heave that tallied 601 points.
After Clarke leaped 17-11 (688 points) in the long jump for sixth place and Townsend posted a distance of 17-7 (660 points) for eighth, the pentathlon concluded with the 800m. Clarke crossed the finish line in 2:31.67 for 672 points and Townsend was 10th in 2:43.65 (532 points).
The men’s heptathlon began with Stoudemire and McGill placing fourth and seventh in the 60m with times of 7.19 (816 points) and 7.33 (769 points). Stoudemire charged into third place overall when he leaped 23-0 3/4 (821 points) on his final attempt in the long jump to place third in the event. McGill was sixth, jumping 21-4 1/4 (700 points).
McGill made up ground in the shot put, throwing a PR 48-5 1/2 for 776 points on his second attempt to place No. 2 in the event. Stoudemire managed a 34-2 1/4 (700 points) toss that placed 11th.
Heading into the last event of the evening for the men, McGill and Stoudemire held the fourth and fifth positions in the overall standings. McGill managed to clear 6-2, the best of his career, in the high jump for 696 points and fifth place. Stoudemire jumped 5-10 1/2 (619 points) for sixth.
The SEC Indoor Championships continue Saturday beginning with the women’s 20-pound weight throw at 10 a.m. The men’s heptathlon concludes with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m.
