BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Junior pitcher Melissa Hendon worked both sides of the circle as the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Campbell Camels 1-0 in game one Wednesday afternoon. Hendon (4-1) provided the Gamecocks’ only run of the game and recorded 14 strikeouts in her fourth complete game of the season to extend the Garnet and Black’s record to 14-2 for the year. The Ringgold, Ga. Native went 2-for-3 at the plate to account for two of USC’s four total runs.

Hendon put the Gamecocks on the board in the second inning when she took a 1-0 count over the left centerfield wall to record her first career home run and gave USC the 1-0 lead.

Ashton Payne extended her hitting streak to eight games, the longest of the season, when she singled to lead off the third inning. She has now hit in 15 of South Carolina’s 16 games.

Hendon and the Gamecocks retired eight consecutive batters before Campbell put on a base runner. With two outs, Hendon hit Stephanie Pappas in the third inning to break up the perfect game.

Hendon continued with successful pitching as she made it through 4.2 innings without a hit. The Camels shook up the no-hitter in the fifth when Brittany Stanley singled through the left side.

The Camels picked up one more hit in the game when Megan Paul singled with two outs in the sixth, but Hendon and the Gamecocks retired the next four batters to preserve the win and extend their win streak to six games.
