STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State Bulldogs (22-15, 5-7) used a two-run inning to grab the 2-1 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks (25-11, 3-6) in game one of a doubleheader Saturday. Becky Martinez was responsible for the Gamecocks’ lone run with an RBI single in the sixth.

Martinez, who went 2-for-3, drove in Lindsay Walker, who also went 2-for-3, for the run. Walker reached when she singled with one out and advanced on a groundout before scoring from second. The duo combined for four of South Carolina’s five hits.

The game winning runs came in the first when the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning with two singles and a walk before the Gamecocks recorded an out. MSU scored when Jessie Bailey hit a two-out, two-RBI single to drive in Chelsea Bramlett and Nakita Boyce and gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

The Gamecocks recorded all five hits off of Kelli Miller who improved to 9-6 on the season, while the Bulldogs scratched out six hits off of Melissa Hendon, who fell to 10-7. Hendon has lost six straight appearances and is 2-5 in SEC action.
