COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team is back in the top 25 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s poll at No. 22, a jump of 10 spots from last week’s rating. It is the Gamecocks’ best ranking since holding down the No. 19 spot in early March 2006.

Carolina (15-3, 7-1 SEC) is currently riding a seven-match unbeaten streak and has its best SEC record after eight matches since first competing in the conference for the 1992 season. The Gamecocks are tied for first place in the league with Vanderbilt and Georgia.

Individually, sophomore Gira Schofield soared to No. 55 in the nation in singles, a leap of 63 places from her previous ranking. She has won five of her past six matches, including two against opponents who were ranked in the top 30 at the time of the meeting. Schofield is 16-11 overall this season and 12-5 playing the No. 1 singles position.

Schofield and freshman Ana Marija Zubori are ranked No. 32 in doubles in the newest rankings as well. The duo has been as high as 18th this year and is 17-7 overall. Playing the top doubles position for Carolina in all but one match this year, Schofield and Zubori are 11-6 in dual competition.

The Gamecocks host their final regular-season home match Friday when No. 26-ranked Kentucky comes to Columbia, S.C., for a 2 p.m. contest. South Carolina is undefeated playing at home this year with a 10-0 record. The first 50 fans will receive a free Gamecock T-shirt and visor for supporting the women’s tennis team.
