For the second consecutive semester, the University of South Carolina’s mean grade point average (GPA) of its 482 student-athletes eclipsed the 3.0 mark, posting a combined 3.008, as the athletics department released its fall academic report today.
A record-tying 13 of the University’s 17 athletic programs posted a 3.0 GPA or better for the Fall 2007. It marked the fifth straight semester that a dozen or more of the athletics programs exceeded the 3.0 GPA plateau. For the ninth consecutive semester, the women’s golf team led the way with a team GPA of 3.481, barely nipping the men’s golf team, which turned in a 3.478. Softball (3.461), volleyball (3.452) and men’s tennis (3.415) also logged team GPA’s of 3.4 or better. In addition, football, men’s soccer and volleyball each logged its highest “in-season” team GPA on record.
Forty-five student-athletes were named to the President’s List, which honors students with a perfect 4.0 GPA, while 116 student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List.
The overall mean GPA for 18,232 USC-Columbia students in the fall of 2007 was 3.148. The fall GPA for the 276 male student-athletes was 2.839, while the mean GPA for the 206 female student-athletes was 3.235.
