GAINESVILLE, Fla.Quentin Moore, Marvin Reitze and Michael Zajac each won their individual events Saturday to pace No. 16 South Carolina at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational. Zajac won the weight throw at 62-11.50 (19.19m), Moore won the 400m dash at 47.89 and freshman Reitze earned his first collegiate win in the pole vault at 16-08.75 (5.10m).

Reitze led a Gamecock pole vault corps that continues to improve under second year coach Lawrence Johnson. Reitze improved two inches on his season opening jump last week while sophomore Matt Shuler set a new PR to place fourth at 16-00.75 (4.90m).

Provisional marks were scarce for all teams at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center Saturday, but the Gamecocks were able to get four provisional times – two each in hurdles and the 55m dash. Ronetta Alexander ran a provisional mark for the second consecutive weekend after running a 7.76 in the preliminary round and the final of the 55m hurdles. On the men’s side, Johnny Dutch notched his first provisional time of the year after setting a new personal best in the 55m hurdles at 7.32. Sophomore sprinters Shayla Mahan and Lakya Brookins earned the other two provisional times in the 55m dash as Mahan ran a 6.84 in the prelims and Brookins placed third at 6.82.

Aaron Searles notched Carolina’s other new PR at the meet with a jump of 44-11.00 (13.69m) in the triple jump to place sixth.

In the men’s 55m dash, Johnathan Hancock took sixth at 6.34 while Lamar Markett came in 11th at 6.41. Bryce Sherman (13th-6.45) and Antonio Sales (16th-6.54) rounded out the Gamecock effort in the event In the 400m, Moore claimed the victory at 47.89 followed by Obakeng Ngwigwa in third at 48.19 and Aaron Anderson in sixth at 48.99.

In the women’s 400m, Brandi Cross took fourth at 55.06. In the 3,000-meter run, Danielle Barnes claimed third at 9:45.35 and Beatrice Biwott came in seventh at 10:24.75.

The men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams both finished second. The men’s team comprised of Moore, Ngwigwa, Dutch and Anderson ran a 3:12.50. The women’s team ran a 3:41.61 and was run by Kelsey McCorkle, Cross, Gabby Glenn and Nadonnia Rodrigues.

In the women’s pole vault, Liza Todd and Sallie Gurganus finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Todd cleared a 12-07.50 (5.10m) and Gurganus cleared 12-03.50 (3.75m). In other women’s field events, Kayla Blake, Corey Bowen and Keke Clarke each cleared 5-02.25 (1.58m) in the high jump to finish 7-8-9. Freshman Radiance Basden took fourth in the triple jump at 38-11.75 (11.88m).

South Carolina returns to action next Friday when the men and women compete at the prestigious Millrose Games at the Armory Track in New York City. Portions of the meet will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
