CONWAY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina track and field team posted seven first-place finishes in their first day of competition at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina, officially starting the 2009 outdoor season for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecock women were responsible for five of the first-place finishes with three coming in event finals and two in preliminary rounds. Sallie Gurganus won the pole vault at 12-05.50 (3.80m), Beatrice Biwott won the steeplechase at 11:17.35 and the 4x200m relay team of Brandi Cross, Porche Byrd, Kelsey McCorkle and Gabrielle Glenn won at 1:37.63. In preliminary races, Breehana Jacobs took first in the 100m dash at 11.90 while Janica Austin qualified for the NCAA regionals with her 13.83 in the 100m hurdles.
Two Gamecock men placed first in their respective events as Erik Heymann continued his consistent form in the javelin with the win at 203-04 (61.98m). Johnathan Hancock placed first in the 100m dash preliminary round at an NCAA qualifying time of 10.45.
Michael Zajac also qualified for regionals in his first competition of the outdoor season after placing second in the hammer throw at a personal best 211-11 (64.59m).
Saturday’s final round will begin at 10 a.m.
