Spring Practice Update (Free!)

The University of South Carolina football squad scrimmaged for the second time this spring on Saturday morning at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. The offense generated a little more production than they did in the first scrimmage, as they tallied 24 points during the regular portion of the 93-play session, including two long touchdown passes from Stephen Garcia.

Garcia, a redshirt sophomore, had the best day of the signal-callers, completing 14-of-23 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with junior tailback Brian Maddox on a 33-yard touchdown pass and with senior wide receiver Moe Brown on a 59-yard bomb. He also hooked up with Brown on a 3-yard score and scored himself from six-yards out in goal-to-go situations.

Maddox led the rushing attack with nine carries for 55 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown burst to go with his touchdown reception. Freshman Jarvis Giles continued to impress with nine carries for 52 yards and scored on a three-yard run during the goal-to-go situation.

Brown was the top receiver with four catches for 95 yards and the two scores. Jason Barnes also had four catches for 29 yards.

Moe Brown had an outstanding scrimmage,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “I think he caught everything he touched. The quarterbacks did ok. Stephen Garcia did a little bit better today. Reid (McCollum) struggled and the other quarterbacks struggled pretty much. We ran the ball fairly well. Brian Maddox was probably our best runner today. Jarvis Giles did some good ones here at the end.” Spurrier added that the offensive line had a pretty good day except for some occasions where they did not get lined up properly.

Defensive lineman Melvin Ingram was the only player injured in the scrimmage. He sprained his left ankle and was unable to return to action.

The Gamecocks have just two practices remaining prior to next Saturday’s annual Garnet & Black Spring Game. The squad will work out at the Bluff Road practice fields on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7 p.m., while the spring game is set for Williams-Brice Stadium at 1 p.m. on April 11. Admission is free.
