COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (7-5-3, 2-1-2) travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face the 20th-ranked UAB Blazers (10-3-1, 4-1-1) in a crucial Conference USA matchup on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET. Carolina enters the contest ranked fourth in league standings with eight points, while UAB is currently tied with Tulsa for the top spot with 13.
South Carolina looks to snap a three-game winless streak on Wednesday against the Blazers. Carolina most recently earned a 1-1 draw with FIU last Saturday. Junior striker Sam Arthur paces the offense with eight goals and two assists on the year for a total of 18 points. His eight goals rank tied for first in league standings. Junior forward Blake Brettschneider and senior striker Bryan Lowder have each contributed two goals on the year, while Arthur, sophomore midfielder Danny Cates, junior forward Mike Lindsay and senior midfielder Jeff Scannella have each collected two assists. In net for Carolina, goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer currently holds a 1.08 goals against average, having collected 54 saves on the year.
For UAB, 11 different players have found the back of the net this season. Sophomore Babayele Sodade and freshman Kofi Gyawu lead the way with six goals each. UAB, who can clinch a spot in the four-team C-USA tournament with a victory, continues to ride a hot streak, having accrued just one loss over its last 10 contests (8-1-1) coming into Wednesday’s match.
